Renewable Fuels

The course is intended to provide a basic understanding for the production of different biofuels using chemical and biotechnological processes, and their use in combustion processes.

The ITMCs lecture deals with the raw materials available for chemical production, the raw materials change, the chemical value chain as well as the chemical reaction technology as the basis for conversion of biomass.

In the AVT.BioVT lecture, breeding and cultivation of energy crops, biological processes for the digestion of renewable resources (hydrolysis) and fermentation processes are treated. The algorithms are evaluated in terms of their efficiency and practicability. In the ITV lecture, the specifics of fuel properties, combustion modeling and energy balances of renewable fuels are considered. Furthermore, the application and potentials of renewable fuels in machinery such as internal combustion engines and gas turbines and furnaces are part of the lecture.

The biodiesel synthesis is demonstrated practically in a laboratory experiment.

Note:

The lecture "Renewable Fuels (Regenerative Brennstoffe)" consists of three partial lectures, given by AVT.BioVT, ITMC and ITV and has a total workload of 5 ECTS. A joint exam is held every term.

Part I (ITMC)

Winter term, please visit ITMC website

Dr. rer. nat. Irina Delidovich ( Delidovich@itmc.rwth-aachen.de)

Part II (AVT.BioVT)

Summer term, please visit AVT website

Johannes Pastoors, M.Sc. ( Johannes.Pastoors@avt.rwth-aachen.de)

Part III (ITV)

Winter term, Thursday: 8.30 am - 10.30 am, WK (1230|001)

Lecture notes (all parts) -> RWTHmoodle

Sample exercises (all parts) -> RWTHmoodle

The ITV part shall give a basic understanding of biofuels production processes. The influence of biomass structure on the resulting biofuels composition, characteristics of biofuels, combustion modeling and energy balances are examined. The application and potentials of renewable fuels in IC engines, gas turbines and furnaces are evaluated. The potential and application of hydrogen is discussed.
