Investigation of refrigerant/air flames under microgravity

From the 26th of October until the 6th of November 2020, Raik Hesse, Dr. Chaimae Bariki, and principal investigator Dr. Joachim Beeckmann had a research stay at the ‘center of applied space technology and microgravity’ (ZARM) in Bremen. In the drop tower facility, 146 meters in height, of the ZARM institute, they performed investigations with the research scope “refrigerant/air-flames under microgravity – safety assessment for fire”. A capsule holding ITV’s spherical combustion chamber and optical setup for Schlieren imaging is released from the tip of the tower. During freefall, the spherical flame propagation is captured under almost zero-gravity conditions.

Dr. Joachim Beeckmann participates in the 35th DLR Parabolic Flight Campaign

The 35th DLR Parabolic Flight Campaign takes place from September 16 to September 25. Dr. Joachim Beeckmann performs together with Dr. Chaimae Bariki from ITV and French research partners, Prof. Fabien Halter and Dr. Christian Chauveau, both from ICARE - CNRS Orléans, experiments on: „Slowly propagating flames under microgravity: Influence of Low-Temperature Chemistry.“ A spherical combustion chamber rig serves as the experimental apparatus and provides high-speed imaging of spherically expanding flames.

April 1, 2019: The institute mourns Günter Paczko

Our institute mourns the loss of Günter Paczko, who died suddenly on April 1st, 2019, and for all of us unexpectedly, at the age of 59. Mr. Paczko had been closely connected to our institute since the early 90s and until a few days ago he worked enthusiastically on scientific issues. We were therefore deeply dismayed to hear of the news of his far too early death. With Mr. Paczko, we lose an always helpful, friendly and dutiful colleague who was valued by everyone for his high level of competence and reliability. Our deep sympathy and solidarity go to his relatives. We will always remember Mr. Paczko well.
